Job Description

This is a 12-month mandate either in Dakar, Senegal; Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Accra, Ghana

The mandate stems from the Equality in Action Voluntary Cooperation Program (PCV), which is being rolled out in 12 countries and 3 regions over an eight-year period (2020-2028). The PCV aims to increase the involvement of local partner organizations in countries of intervention in inclusive, innovative and sustainable initiatives that will advance gender equality. Oxfam's role is to support these organizations, working with the most vulnerable and marginalized people, to claim and exercise their rights. Oxfam puts the rights of women, girls and vulnerable and marginalized people at the heart of everything we do.

Here's what your daily life will look like:

The volunteer will be in support of the Civic Space Knowledge Hub, which is a network of Oxfam’s staff working on a theme that is of strategic importance to the confederation. The KH is to mobilize and animate the network, broker connections and provide links, insights and spot opportunities for further learning, knowledge generation and exchange. The mandate will be based in a country of the Voluntary Cooperation Program and will have a global reach in the different countries / regions of the confederation. In close collaboration with the KH core team and wider network, this position will focus 50% of the time supporting specifically the West Africa Civic Space Working Group and countries in that region. Specifically, the volunteer will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop relevant, creative and user-friendly communications products on civic space issues with different formats such as videos, infographics, and presentation decks for partners and Oxfam;
  • Support producing, editing, translating, and sharing learning and knowledge products on civic space issues across the confederation, including the Quarterly Newsletter, case studies, toolkits, briefing papers, and other products for partners and Oxfam ;
  • Contribute animating the Knowledge Hub´s working groups and community groups, by documenting the monthly/quarterly calls and key meetings and sharing relevant, sharing agendas and invitations;
  • Manage membership list for recruitment, updating, outreach of the Knowledge Hub within Oxfam;
  • Manage the internal coms platforms of the knowledge hub (workplace pages and compass repository) with UpToDate content, engaging communications style and easily accessible material in multiple languages;
  • Interview and consolidate information from Oxfam partners and staff in the WAF region for learning and communications products for internal and external use;
  • Specific country support to countries of the WAF Civic Space Working Group on governance and civic space work, as agreed with country teams.


For this mandate you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status in Canada;
  • Have university degree in communication, political science, social sciences, development studies, gender studies or other relevant field;
  • Have 3 years of relevant working experience in communication, digital community management, multi-stakeholder engagement, virtual community of practice (in non-profit sector an asset);
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to translate complex information into informative, engaging, and visually appealing content;
  • Have at least basic knowledge of civic space issues, such as freedom of association and peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, digital rights, democratization, and protection of human rights defenders;
  • Have a good intercultural sensitivity, a good understanding of diverse perspectives and the ability to communicate in respectful and inclusive ways;
  • Minority group members encouraged to apply;
  • Be fluent in English and French, spoken and written (required);
  • Master the Office suite and design softwares such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.


What we offer:

  • Monthly allowance for living expenses;
  • 20% increase in living allowance for an accompanying child (maximum of 2 children)
  • 1,500$ CAN per year/per child for schooling.
  • Monthly amount for rent;
  • Round trip flight with 2 checked luggage;
  • Round trip flight for accompanying child(ren).
  • 200$ CAD for additional luggage;
  • Advantageous medical insurance for you and the accompanying child(ren);
  • A volunteer support program during your mandate and up to two months after your return to Canada;
  • 20 days of vacation and other holidays;
  • Access to various training courses (E-Learning, etc.);
  • A rewarding experience with a well-known and recognized organization.

Note that conditions related to accompanying children do not apply to Burkina Faso
