Job Description

Mandate duration: 12 months Start date: As soon as possible

This is a 12-month mandate in Accra, Ghana.

The mandate is under the Equality in Action Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP), which takes place in in about ten countries in Africa, Latin America, and Middle East over an eight-year period (2020-2028). The VCP aims to increase the involvement of local partners in inclusive, innovative, and sustainable initiatives that will advance gender equality. Oxfam's role is to support these organizations, working with the most vulnerable and marginalized people, to claim and exercise their rights. Oxfam places the rights of women, girls, and vulnerable and marginalized people at the heart of everything it does.

Here’s what your daily life will look like:

In close collaboration with the Oxfam in Ghana and the The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), the Advisor will contribute to:

  • Strengthen gender-responsive and inclusive HR policies by reviewing and revising HR manuals and policies to reflect feminist principles, gender justice, safeguarding, and non-discrimination.
  • Provide capacity building support by designing and facilitating training for HR teams, managers, and staff on inclusive recruitment, performance appraisal, safeguarding, and workplace conduct.
  • Ensure compliance with Ghanaian labor laws and international best practices in safeguarding and employee protection.
  • Strengthen systems for talent management, succession planning, and staff development with a gender lens.
  • Support the implementation of staff feedback mechanisms and grievance resolution systems.
  • Collaborate with safeguarding focal persons to ensure HR practices are aligned with organizational commitments and support the development of internal mechanisms for safe and confidential reporting of harassment, abuse, or misconduct.

For this mandate you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status in Canada
  • Have university degree in human resource management, organizational development, or other relevant fields • Have 3 to 5 years of related HR experience, ideally in development or feminist organizations.
  • Have experience supporting safeguarding and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse in organizational settings
  • Have demonstrated ability to train and mentor HR teams with participatory approaches.
  • Have knowledge of Ghana’s labor and HR regulatory framework (an asset).
  • Be fluent in English, spoken and written (required)
  • Master the Microsoft Office Suite

What we offer:

  • Monthly allowance for your current expenses
    • 20% increases in the living allowance for one accompanying child (maximum of 2 children)
    • $1,500 CAD per year/child for school fees
  • A monthly amount for the rent
  • Round trip airfare with 2 checked baggage - Round trip airfare for the accompanying child(s)
    • $200 CAD for additional baggage
  • Advantageous medical insurance for you and the accompanying child(s)
  • A volunteer support program during your term and up to two months after your return to Canada
