Opportunity

This is an exciting new role for an experienced Building Inspector or person with deep knowledge, experience and education surrounding sewage systems. This role will be responsible for running the operations of the updated Sewage System Maintenance Inspection Program.

Responsibilities

• Act as an appointed inspector by the Township of Muskoka Lakes to run the Sewage System Maintenance Inspection program.

• Act as Property Standards Officer in regards to Sewage System Maintenance Inspection Program.

• Identify and plan areas to be inspected as scheduled.

• Coordinate, train and complete seasonal Phase I Inspections with support staff. Act as lead for seasonal inspection staff.

• Issue Building Code Act Orders, prepare Provincial Offences Act Information and Charges as necessary and follow though to resolution or prosecution as needed.

• Attend properties throughout the Township to determine whether a sewage system is in compliance with the operation and maintenance requirements outlined in the Ontario Building Code or previous approval.

• Enter site/system and field inspection results into database, update, and classify system based on policy direction. Maintain detailed records, including photos and statements where appropriate.

• Review and assess any septic information on file in preparation for inspection. Information could include drawings made by homeowner, septic/building permits, or pump out reports or previous inspection records. Where no information is available, contact the property owner to collect information on their septic system.

• Assist in creation and maintenance of online information regarding the Sewage System Maintenance Inspection Program (progress, procedures, inspection areas, changes, etc.).

• Provide information and updates to local organizations (Lake Associations), attend Association meetings to provide information and updates on the program.

• Respond to general questions, complaints and concerns regarding the operation and maintenance of on-site sewage systems.

• Responsible for communication including reports to Council or Committees, response letters to property owners, and a year-end report in co-ordination with the third party Phase II inspection provider.

• Complete Sewage System inspections and application reviews in absence of Sewage System Inspector.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Post-secondary education in environmental science, architectural, construction, or applied science technology program or related equivalent experience.

• Successful completion of the Bill 124 exams; minimum Onsite Sewage Systems and General Legal exams completed in order to be appointed as a building inspector.

• 3-5 years experience in a municipality, by-law enforcement, and/or construction of sewage system installations.

• Strong knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act

• Valid Ontario driver’s license and Pleasure Craft Operator license.
