Position Overview The Lead Swim Instructor helps set up the program at the beginning of the season, trains, mentors and coaches swim instructors, teaches swimming lessons, ensures a safe beach environment for patrons, and acts as an examiner for the senior level final testing.
Summary Of Responsibilities
• Working in the lake and on the beach/dock, instruct and evaluate swimming students using the Lifesaving Society standards.
• Act as examiner for Bronze Star, Cross and Medallion and Lifesaving Rookies, Ranger Patrol and Star Patrol final testing throughout the season as needed.
• Oversees the swim instructors and assists with scheduling and submitting weekly timesheets.
• Works closely with Public Works Operations Assistant to ensure staff coverage for booked classes.
• Complete daily inspections to ensure docks and buoy lines are secured, fixed and maintained as required. Report issues
• Maintain the schedule for each class, while providing time to answer student or parent questions as needed.
• Submit completed report cards, skill sheets and attendance information within the pre-established time lines.
• Act as first responder to emergencies and provide first aid treatment until EMS arrives.
• Provide information to the public on programs, events and water safety information.
• Provide daily maintenance and clean-up of beach and park area, monitor washrooms to ensure proper conduct and discourage acts of vandalism.
• Report illegal behaviour (alcohol consumption, vandalism) to the police and ensure a report is written for each incident
• Assist with or lead staff training sessions throughout the season and participate as required.
• Prepare program reports and statistics at end of program season and make recommendations for improvement.
• Provide feedback on staff performance for the season.
• Work together with other departments as a team and communicate effectively in a positive and professional manner.

Qualifications And Experience
• Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor
• Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Pool Option
• Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Waterfront Option (preferred)
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR
• Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training
• Lifesaving Society Examiner
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License
• Ability to effectively interact, consult, and communicate with employees and members of public
• Police Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening
