Opportunity
Reporting to the Chief By-Law Enforcement Officer, the successful candidate will respond to complaints and complete proactive enforcement for various by-laws in the municipality. The candidate will work in both independently and as part of a team. This person will gain valuable knowledge on communication techniques as well as law enforcement related experience.
Position Responsibilities
• Enforces and maintains expertise in Township of Muskoka Lakes and District Municipality of Muskoka by-laws, and relevant enforcement procedures, including the Burning By-law, Fire Routes By-law, Dark Sky By-law, Fireworks By-law, Noise Control By-law, Parks By-law, Property Standards By-law, Parking By-law, Public Docks and Ramps By-law, Sign By-law, Dog Control By-law (including securing dogs at large, returning them to owners/impounding them, if required) and any other legislation pertaining to certain enforcement criteria.
• Utilize various enforcement methods such as proactive patrolling, inspections, education, negotiations, verbal and written warnings, issuance of Orders and penalties under the Township's Administrative Monetary Penalty System, and the Provincial Offences Act.
• Addresses by-law concerns to promote safety and compliance, providing education and follow-up to complainants, as required.
• Attend private and public properties in response to concerns of by-law contraventions, conducting additional follow-up inspections, as required.
• Collect evidence and prepare briefs for AMPS hearings and court proceedings.
• Assist the Licensing Officer in reviewing licenses for Short Term Rental Accommodations, Refreshment Vehicles, and other business licenses. Assist in enforcement of the Short-Term Rental Licensing By-law and the Business Licensing By-law.
• Maintain detailed notes (electronic or otherwise) of concerns of by-law contraventions, requests for information, investigations, activities and conduct research, as required. Compile supporting information and prepare reports on all inspections and enforcement activities.
• Work in a friendly and courteous manner and communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, elected officials, and the general public.
• Work both independently and as a part of a collaborative team.
• Complete other duties related to this position, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Enrollment in a post-secondary program in a related field (i.e. Police Studies, Community and Justice Services or Protection, Security and Investigation), or related experience.
• Experience and level of comfort with dogs, interest/ability to learn animal control techniques.
• Working knowledge of the municipal legislative framework including the Provincial Offences Act, the Municipal Act, the Planning Act, and other relevant Provincial statutes and regulations.
• Strong communication and mediation skills to negotiate to gain compliance with laws and mediate on controversial issues and concerns between parties.
• Computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Records Management Systems. • Clear vulnerable sector police background check.
• Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license and an acceptable drivers abstract.
What We Offer
• Seasonal Position: May 5th to August 29th, 2025
• 35 hours per week (evenings and weekends required with 2 consecutive days off per week)
• Starting at $26.91 per hour
