POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Manager at UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre plays a pivotal role in building and protecting the Centre's brand reputation, securing earned media coverage, and amplifying stories that inspire donor engagement and public awareness in earned, owned and paid media. As the strategic and day-to-day lead for communications, the Manager collaborates closely with hospital leaders, clinicians, other UHN teams, to develop and execute proactive communications strategies. The Communications Manager also bridges the Centre’s public relations and digital marketing efforts to ensure media visibility is maximized across all platforms.

The Communications Manager reports to the Director, Communications & Public Relations and plays an integral role in ensuring the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre’s public-facing storytelling is compelling, strategic, and aligned with organizational priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Media Relations Leadership

  • Lead all aspects of media relations, including strategy development, proactive pitching, media monitoring, and spokesperson preparation.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with journalists, producers, and influencers; maintain up-to-date media lists and contact databases.
  • Collaborate directly with PMCC and UHN clinical, research and executive leadership to surface stories that reflect those institutions’ excellence in patient care, research, and education.
  • Draft and distribute press materials including news releases, Q&As, briefing notes, and key messages for external audiences.
  • Proactively monitor media and public sentiment to identify opportunities for proactive and reactive media outreach, insights to support mass fundraising, as well as potential reputational threats.
  • Work closely with UHN Foundation teams to extend earned media coverage through social media, newsletters, web and other channels.

Digital Storytelling

  • Work closely with Peter Munk Cardiac Centre team to identify key opportunities for storytelling.
  • Manage organic social media platforms, including sourcing, production and development.
  • Identify opportunities for paid media campaigns on digital, traditional and other media.
  • Track and monitor performance and prevalence of Peter Munk Cardiac Centre across all platforms.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors including photographers, videographers and talent agencies.
  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and innovations in PR and communications, media, digital engagement, and measurement.

Reporting & Evaluation

  • Track and report on media coverage and digital content performance; analyze performance and outcomes to guide continuous improvement.
  • Create post-campaign media summaries, insight reports, and KPI dashboards to assess effectiveness and inform future strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in public/media relations, journalism, or strategic communications, preferably in complex environments such as healthcare, education, or public sector.
  • Proven track record leading media relations initiatives that generate positive, high-impact earned media coverage.
  • University degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with media, executives, volunteers and other high-profile stakeholders.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex topics into accessible and engaging stories.
  • Strong planning, project management, and multitasking capabilities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience managing or mentoring interns or junior team members is an asset.
  • Proficiency in media analytics platforms such as Meltwater, Cision and/or Muck Rack.

  • May have some activity outside of the office to support meetings
  • The Foundation has a hybrid work model. Staff will be required to be in office a minimum of 2 days per week and will be required to have a safe home office set up for the remainder of the working days (specifics to be planned with your manager).
