Job Description

Candidates in this position are expected to demonstrate good work ethic, dependability and experience in the field of first aid and medical care. This position requires confidence as well as willingness to work with clientele of all ages and abilities. The medic must be able to quickly assess and respond to medical and first aid needs as well as seek help when needed. The medic must be able to clearly communicate directives to all age groups, as well assertively and consistently take leadership in responding to accidents and incidents.

Responsibilities

Primary Job Functions:

  • Review medical forms on the first day of each session and record/report medical needs
  • Storing and distribution of medications as needed
  • Provide first aid care as needed
  • Assess and communicate safety procedures throughout all camp activities
  • Consult and advise on the need for additional medical attention
  • Keep written records of medical needs / visits to the camp infirmary
  • Report and record medical incidents (accident, injury, clinic/hospital visit, etc)
  • Maintain first aid inventory and ensure all first aid kits are maintained and stocked

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Medical Review & Documentation- Adhering to Bill 25 rules Review camper medical forms on the first day of each session. Record and report any identified medical needs. Maintain accurate written records of medical visits, treatments, and incidents (accidents, injuries, clinic/hospital visits).
  • Medication Management Store, secure, and distribute medications as prescribed. Administer and document daily prescribed medications.
  • First Aid & Emergency Care Provide first aid care as needed during camp activities. Responsible for maintenance of AED’s, as well as staff training for proper use. Serve as the primary point of contact for all medical issues and emergencies. Coordinate first-response actions in case of fire, severe injury, or health outbreaks. Implement emergency protocols and liaise with local emergency services when required.
  • Health & Safety Oversight Assess and communicate safety procedures across all camp activities. Monitor for signs of contagious illness and initiate preventive or containment measures (e.g., isolation, sanitation protocols). Promote proper hygiene, hydration, nutrition, and sun safety among campers and staff.
  • Staff Education & Training Provide health and safety briefings during staff orientation. Educate camp staff in CPR, first aid, universal precautions, and infection control for those that need it. Ensure policies are in place and reviewed for medical emergency on camp grounds- Cliffs, Beaver Lake, Hogan Huts Ensure training for staff is done on this
  • Inventory & Station Management Maintain first aid inventory and ensure all kits are stocked and functional. Ensure the nurse’s station is staffed and operational during camp hours.

Work Schedule Requirement:

  • The camp nurse must be on-site Monday through Friday, when the majority of campers are present. The designated day off will be from Saturday morning until Sunday (24hrs), prior to the arrival of a new camper group. This schedule is non-negotiable and reflects the increased responsibility associated with the role and corresponding salary adjustment. Coverage during the nurse’s day off must be provided by the next qualified staff member to ensure continuity of care.
Competencies
  • Maintain nursing standards by being registered and in good standing with the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ).
  • Operate within your legal Scope of Practice, as defined by the Québec Nurses Act.
  • Adhere to National Camp Nursing Standards and comply with Bill 25 regarding confidentiality.
